Located on an airy, elevated site windows in this home looks onto Australia’s first lighthouse. Built by convict architect Francis Greenway in 1818, the Governor was so pleased with the building he granted the prisoner his freedom. “The site feels like it’s on the edge of the earth, it has a real sense of drama and history,” says the designer. “I wanted to honour that while ensuring the Italian spirit and design ideals of the original home lived on.”
Inspired by Italian family life, The Light House features a neutral palette layered with classicism. However modernity is weaved in, as seen in the open-plan entertaining area. This expansive, light-filled space is representative of the way we live now — as opposed to the sectioned-off rooms present before the extensive renovation.
Moving through the home is a sensory journey. On arrival you’re embraced by creamy Venetian plaster curves in a double-height space, presided over by a cloud chandelier. After crossing the checkerboard marble floor you’re met by symmetrical marble portals to the formal dining space and dark, moody cigar room. Finally you come into the light of the relaxed, open-plan kitchen, living and dining area.
