The building industry is responsible for 30% of CO2 emissions and 50% of resource consumption worldwide. The all-timber Lustnau Fire Department shows how to reverse this balance with holistic sustainability concepts: Instead of the 85 tons of CO2 produced when building a comparable concrete structure, only six tons of CO2 were produced. The used wood, which is regionally sourced and FSC-certified, binds an additional 380 tons of CO2. Furthermore, nothing else than renewable energy sources are being used: sun power for electricity and a wood pellet oven for heating.
Form follows function: The design is based on a logical floor plan oriented to the users’ needs. This resulted in short, non-intersecting routes. The tripartite structure gives the building an elegant appearance, which is further enhanced by the rounded corners. The vertically oriented wood facade shows the building’s vibrant character in the urban landscape.
The transparent vehicle hall has a 14-meter span and is carried by wooden beams. Natural materials create a high quality of stay in the building’s interior.
Uncompromisingly focusing on sustainability is a pioneering approach.
