The Building and Housing Cooperative Rhenania recognizes the original values and integrates them with today's demands. A comprehensive refurbishment plan aims to upgrade five residential settlements.
The initial phase focuses on fully renovating 1950s buildings on Brunnenwiesenstrasse, emphasizing asset appreciation and local business support. A circular approach to building materials prioritizes reusing the structural framework and utilizing regional materials to understand their value chains.
To reduce CO2 emissions, the building's structural integrity will be preserved. The basement will be excavated, transforming into a new entrance level with communal spaces. The project actively fosters social interaction among residents, for instance, through new addressing towards a redesigned courtyard or integrating garage accesses into the environment instead of directly into building stairwells.
The initiative aims to create affordable housing with high floor plan flexibility to accommodate evolving family structures. It is socially and energetically sustainable, aiming for new-construction quality without total property demolition.
