The urban transformation of the Almaš Neighborhood, one of Novi Sad's oldest areas, includes a complete reconstruction of infrastructure, paving, landscape design, facade conservation, public lighting, traffic management, a new pedestrian zone, urban furniture, visual identity, and tourist signage. Designated a protected cultural-historical unit in 2019, the project aims to revitalize the area while preserving its ambiance, addressing issues like clogged streets, poor infrastructure, and a lack of greenery.
The transformation focuses on reducing car traffic by expanding the pedestrian zone, calming traffic, and restricting parking to residents, while visitor parking is moved to nearby garages. Emphasis is placed on creating new tree lines and small squares, with lighting inspired by traditional street lanterns and natural cobblestone paving in earth tones.
This comprehensive project, overseen by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of Novi Sad and funded by the city and AP Vojvodina, involves collaboration with local institutions and the Almaš Association, aiming to establish a vibrant new cultural district in Novi Sad.
