PUNGGOL GREEN: UNUTILISED SPACE TURNS INTO A COMMUNITY OASIS
Punggol, located in Singapore's North-East Region, is a rapidly growing area. Punggol Green has been designed as a social spine and quality space that connects communities together.
Before its transformation, this 1.2-hectare plot was a 500-meter-long unutilised space under the viaduct. However, the team noticed great potential in this space to benefit the community and the environment. Strong support and collaboration with six government agencies and the local community enabled the design team to navigate many constraints within this site to create a unique recreational space.
The project team recognised the importance of community engagement. Through numerous rounds of public engagement, they were able to understand the community's requirements and foster a sense of ownership over the project among residents.
In conclusion, Punggol Green exemplifies the importance of thoughtful design in creating spaces that benefit the community. The park serves as a model for how unutilised spaces can be designed creatively to cater to diverse community needs while also promoting ecological connectivity and sustainability.
