Envisioned as the state-of-the-art track and field, Hayward Field propels athletes onto the world stage. Offering magical views, plazas welcome the global community, anchor the stadium within the urban context, and weave the pedestrian corridor with the reinvented campus open space. A century after the first bleachers, athletes competed on this iconic stage at The World Games celebrating Athletic Championships brought to the USA for the first time.
The landscape biodiversity design approach reduced the consumption of resources. Scalable LID strategies naturally filter stormwater, fulfilling the University’s goals. Native plants and habitats restore lush softscapes in the plaza and corridor, featuring large Douglas Firs providing shade, reducing urban heat islands, and decreasing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Propelling athletes’ aspirations, Douglas Firs’ branching structure provides local birds, animals, and insects a home, while accommodating pedestrian and vehicular movement.
