Reimagining two heritage buildings as a dynamic mixed-use development
The Blood Alley project delivers 142 much needed homes – 80 affordable and 62 market rental units – addressing Vancouver’s growing need for diverse, purpose-built housing.
Located in the Gastown Historic District, a national historic site since 2009, the Stanley and New Fountain Hotels are key heritage assets. Gastown, the birthplace of Vancouver, dates back to 1865 and reflects the city’s evolution through its historic streets, alleys, and buildings—including Trounce Alley in Blood Alley Square.
Blood Alley conserves the original Cordova hotel façades, while rehabilitating the overall site by building a new street wall and mid-rise tower behind the historical façades. The scale and proportion of the streetscape façades have been sensitively scaled to contribute to the conservation of Gastown’s heritage character and fabric. The variation of height within the block presents a characteristic sawtooth appearance to the block profile.
Public art is central to the project, featuring Ghost Lobby by Henriquez—a fossilized reconstruction of the original Stanley lobby—and a mural by Douglas Coupland.
