Kunshan City Square and its subway station have undergone a comprehensive transformation since 2022.Our practice focused on the above-ground architectural landscape.Every city in China has its central square, often monumental in scale yet empty and uninviting. The failure lies in their lack of program. In this project,we focused on designing urbanity by curating effective programs in place for the public and landscaping for inhabitation.A series of sinuous and undulating corridors were introduced to establish human scale within the square. Its meandering paths frame courtyards for diverse events while discreetly integrating subway infrastructure.Along the central axis, four luminous"floating volumes"house elevator halls and retail. The double-layered skin glows at night,as architectural beacons and landmarks to light the square.Embedded with swaying-column system, the corridor canopy remains light and dynamic, floating like ribbons with unobstructed sightlines. The square has been transformed from an empty and uninviting place into a vibrant civic realm since its completion, evolving from a symbolic showcase into a genuinely public space that fosters everyday life and community engagement.

Bio
Dazhou And Associates was founded in spring 2019 and is currently based in Shanghai. The studio aims to explore the inner spirit of architecture design and its peripherals through every practice, involving in urban, architectural and interior design. Urbanism, Prototype and Atmosphere are the three topics that we currently focus on. We desire for presenting physical experience of the architectural environment to search for the poetry of life. Also, we emphasize the relationship between environment and architecture to explore a broader conception of nature.
