On the eve of the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing, Hiroshima’s community leaders and the Kamihatchi Kiteru turned to the Aioi District as the heart of renewal. In this International City of Peace, a corridor once dominated by six lanes of automobiles, streetcars, and narrow sidewalks is transformed into a human-centered urban district. The Aioi Street Transit Park becomes a living mosaic of multi-generational, flexible open space - an urban grid redefined as both linear park and transit mall. Streetcar lanes framed by tranquil landscapes now connect neighborhoods, museums, monuments, and markets, while buses and micromobility weave seamlessly through the civic fabric. Community-driven parklets invite daily life, cultural expression, and celebration, transforming a former barrier into an epicenter of vibrant, year-round activation. The design is an act of remembrance and resilience, shaping a public realm where peace, memory, and future generations converge.
