The architectural complex is located in the core and buffer zones of the Grand Canal World Heritage site. The existing buildings on the site include Qing Dynasty timber structures, Republic of China-era sauce workshop factories, and residential houses from the 1950s-1980s.Among these, Gue Family Sauce Workshop were initially built during the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty. Brick-carved gate towers, boundary stones, ancient alleys, and historical walls constitute profound historical elements.
The principle of the regeneration design is "prioritize analysis over intervention". Through in-depth study, identify the construction methods and preservation status of each structure. After removing concrete roofs and illegally built additions, recreate the spatial frameworks of the sauce workshop.
To enhance spatial quality within the sauce workshop, partial walls were demolished to expose preserved triangular roof trusses (Republic of China-era factory), transforming them into vibrant public spaces. A brick-carved gate tower within the sauce workshop, featuring rustic style, defines a small outdoor performance space. It creates a distinctive scene for the sauce workshop.
