Stokes Architecture + Design created a place that beckons a town’s rich past while igniting its promising future by weaving vintage and modern industrial elements throughout. The site is located on a floodplain between two canals, on a very narrow cut of land. They raised the building and devised a grade-level garage. They utilized the entirety of the plot’s irregular, narrow footprint while creating visually distinct designs that fit seamlessly into the existing panorama of the historic town. They married New Hope’s past and present industrial ties with a brick and stone facade, sourced from a nearby quarry, and accentuated it with striking steel-framed windows overlooking the Delaware River. On the front porch they used timber framing techniques. The main lobby is a double-height space that ties to its exterior with timber beams, board and batten paneling, and a stone fireplace. They fashioned every east-facing room with a private balcony with unobstructed views of the river. The team’s work resulted in an impressive, multi-faceted building with a contemporary sensibility that simultaneously feels like it’s been part of New Hope all along.
