Borrowing the ancient concept, the contemporary courier station is to provide citizens a place to rest during their leisure and recreational journeys.
Located on top of the river levee, the site overlooks the picturesque river bank wetland. The levee top was abstracted as a big plane and broken down into smaller pieces, which collectively stacked up, folded down, or overlapped with each other, to form a unified space. We describe the design process as ‘deconstructing’ and ‘rebuilding’ of the levee top.
Hair-awn-muhly grass was introduced to replace the existing hard pavement on the site. The grass’ pink color becomes the signature tint of the place.
The site consists of two pieces of land. The floating horizontal planes derived from the levee top plane easily unify the two parts and reduce possible conflict caused by the previous developments.
Only a small portion of spaces within this composition are enclosed for programmed functions. The buildings essentially become big pavilions that provide visitors a variety of shaded semi-outdoor spaces, where people are well protected from the elements, while being able to enjoy the breeze and the scent of flowers.
