A new interior design in the Patricia R. Guerrieri academic commons will provide students at Salisbury University with a perspective than enhances their learning environment. This new design will include plans that provide each student study space with a variety of environmental options for different types of learning. Moreover, the design will enhance the flexibility of the space, so the student can feel comfortable studying, relaxing, or interacting with others.
The newly designed learning environment at Salisbury University will become a contemporary space through the creative use of architectural elements making use of the five senses. A warm, inviting and comfortable atmosphere will be created through the sensible use of color theory, light theory, sound design, the HVAC system, and ergonomic design. The space planning, material, finish, and build-ins will reflect such theories as place attachment, attention restoration, third place, Pomodoro, bandwagon effect, and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In fact, all aspects of the new design will attend to students’ sensory needs as well as fuel their motivation and passion toward learning.
