The over 100-year-old covered hall was rebuilt to protect the main shrine, the abode of the gods, from the elements.
The 370-year-old main shrine, designated as a cultural asset by the city, was repaired and restored at the same time the covered hall was rebuilt.
The new covered hall is an innovative project that combines old and new technologies, including Japanese “traditional construction methods” that use no metal at all, “Ishiba-date” construction on paving stones, and modern structural calculations called “limit load-bearing capacity calculation.
The simple design of the covered hall is extremely well-designed, with the horizontal and vertical lines of the “pillars,” “penetrations,” and “footings” expressing a Japanese aesthetic. The space, a fusion of traditional technology and modern structural calculation, will pass on the technology and culture of wooden architecture to the next generation, and will once again become a local landmark for the next 100 years or more.
Bio In Japan, traditional techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation are on the decline, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain the skills of traditional craftsmen.
As a temple carpenter and designer, he has participated in numerous architectural awards to convey the new possibilities of traditional techniques to young designers and builders by creating "attractive structural beauty" and "beauty of use" architecture based on the evolution of traditional techniques from the inheritance of traditional techniques.
