The new building for the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) at ETH Zurich serves as a visual landmark on the Schällemätteli Life Sciences Campus in Basel. Its polygonal design harmonizes with the diverse surroundings, functioning as a gateway to the campus and featuring a public diagonal path, which connects street levels through the building. Furthermore it incorporates a flexible room concept focused around a central laboratory core. The design provides defined work areas for individual units while allowing interconnectivity through spiral staircases. Numerous communication areas and visual connections enhance the user experience, making the building conducive to collaboration and innovation. Unlike conventional layouts, it arranges laboratories, evaluation zones, and seminar rooms along the atrium, making them visible and accessible. Student learning areas animate the ground floor, with research group laboratories on upper floors. The Science Lounge on the top floor offers seminar spaces and a roof terrace with a panoramic city view. The building is certified as Minergie ECO and SGNI/DGNB Gold and is designed according to the GI (Good Indoor Climate).
