Located in North Saltivka, the most damaged part of Kharkiv's Saltivka neighborhood and closest to the Russian border, this pilot housing intervention aims to become a replicable model for post-war recovery. The site’s diverse housing typologies and varying degrees of damage offer a unique opportunity to test adaptable solutions that can be scaled across the district. The project introduces prefabricated mass timber modules—bedroom and living room extensions, external staircases, and shared community furniture—attached to existing buildings. These vertical additions are designed to foster visual and verbal interactions among neighbors, helping to ease anxiety and loneliness in the post-war context. Symmetrical triangular forms create partial double-height balconies that enhance natural light and encourage spontaneous encounters. Sourced from Ukraine, the warm-toned timber supports local industry and promotes psychological healing through natural materials and vibrant communal spaces.
